Curriculum
We offer a variety of 30 classes per week with skill levels for beginners through advanced students.
-
Students develop the skills to independently translate and analyze the Torah text and its classical commentaries.
-
Classes concentrate on the moral teachings of the Prophets, and the sociopolitical and spiritual climate of their times.
-
Selected readings of early Jewish philosophers such as Rambam, Maharal, and Ramchal, as well as later thinkers like Rav Kook, Rav Dessler, and Rav Soleveitchik, provide students with a framework to confront the issues they will have to face upon entering a multifaceted Jewish community.
-
Students examine various halachic texts to gain an understanding of the inner workings of the halachic system, including laws of Shabbat, kashrut, brachot, and Jewish life cycle events.
-
This course explores the relationship between the Written and Oral Law, and puts the origins of the Mishna, Gemara, Midrash, and their commentaries into context.
-
Classes discuss one’s relationship to G-d and how one communicates through prayer. Specific prayers such as Shemoneh Esrei, Shema, and morning brachot are also studied in depth.
-
Students investigate Judaism’s ethical demands on the individual and their practical application to interpersonal relationships through texts like Mesillat Yesharim and Pirkei Avot.
-
Students study laws specifically pertaining to Jewish women, including modesty, hair covering, and women in the workplace.
-
Classes cover the history of the Chassidic movement and masters, as well as the teachings of Rebbe Nachman, the Slonimer Rebbe, and the Baal HaTanya
-
Making extensive use of filmed oral histories and other original footage and documents, "Israel History 101" explores key events, personalities and issues in the creation and history of the State of Israel. The class is required of MASA funded students, though all are invited.
-
Our students learn not only the history of suffering and tragedy but also the lessons of personal and national resilience. By engaging with survivors or their children, historians, and rabbinic leaders our students are prepared to face today’s challenging new era with strength, pride, and a historical Torah perspective.
